How long does it take to make this recipe?
Prep time: 2 minutes | Cook time: 8 minutes | Total: 10 minutes. A quick drink to help you relax!
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the spices
In a small bowl, mix all your powdered spices: turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and cardamom. Add the melted coconut oil and mix to create a smooth paste. This step helps disperse the spices evenly in the milk and prevents lumps from forming. Coconut oil also helps the body absorb turmeric, which is fat-soluble. You can make this spice paste in larger quantities and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week for your next golden milk!
Step 2: Heat the Milk
Pour the plant-based milk into a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Do not boil—you just want to heat the milk until it is warm and begins to barely simmer around the edges. If using coconut milk, stir well as it can separate. Milk that is too hot can destroy some of the nutrients in the spices, so the ideal temperature is around 150-175°F—warm enough to be comforting but not boiling.
Step 3: Add the spice paste
Add your spice paste to the warm milk and whisk vigorously for 1-2 minutes to disperse all the spices. The milk will take on that beautiful golden color characteristic of golden milk! Continue whisking so that the spices don’t settle to the bottom. If you have an electric milk frother, now is the perfect time to use it—it creates an amazing frothy texture and mixes the spices perfectly.
Step 4: Add the sweetener
Add honey or maple syrup and stir well until completely dissolved. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking—some people like their golden milk very sweet, while others prefer just a touch of sweetness. Remember that honey should never be added to boiling liquid (it destroys its beneficial enzymes), which is why we add it now that the milk has cooled slightly. Golden milk should be warm but not hot.
Step 5: Froth (Optional)
For golden milk worthy of a trendy café, use a manual or electric milk frother to create a beautiful, creamy foam on top. Submerge the frother into the hot milk and operate it for 20-30 seconds until you get creamy foam. This step isn’t mandatory, but it transforms your drink into a true artisanal latte! The foam also helps retain heat and gives it an incredibly velvety texture.
Step 6: Serve and Garnish
Carefully pour your golden milk into large cups or clear glass mugs to admire the beautiful golden color. If you’ve made foam, it will naturally stay on top. Sprinkle lightly with ground cinnamon for garnish and extra flavor. You can also add a drizzle of honey on top of the foam to create beautiful decorative patterns. Serve immediately while it’s still hot!
Step 7: Drink Mindfully
Golden milk should be sipped slowly, mindfully—it’s liquid meditation! Sit comfortably, hold the warm cup in your hands, and breathe in the spicy aromas. Take small sips and let the warmth and spices warm your body from within. It’s the perfect time to read, meditate, or simply relax. Indian yogis say that golden milk consumed with intention multiplies its benefits!
Pro Tip: Homemade Turmeric Paste
Prepare a large quantity of turmeric paste so you always have golden milk ready in 5 minutes! Mix 1/4 cup of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 cup of water, and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Heat over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring until you get a thick paste. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Use 1 teaspoon per cup of hot milk!
Key Ingredients & Substitutions
Turmeric Powder
Turmeric is the star ingredient in this drink! It gives it its golden color and powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Use organic turmeric to avoid additives. If you have fresh turmeric (root), grate 2-3 cm and use it instead of powder—the flavor will be more vibrant and spicy. Turmeric stains easily, so be careful with your clothes and countertops!
Black Pepper
Black pepper is ESSENTIAL—without it, your body only absorbs about 10% of turmeric! The piperine in black pepper increases the absorption of curcumin (the active compound in turmeric) by up to 2000%. A pinch is enough – you shouldn’t be able to taste the pepper. If you really don’t have any, coconut oil also helps with absorption, but it’s less effective.
Plant-based milk
Coconut milk is the most authentic and creamy—it gives an incomparable velvety texture. Almond milk is lighter and slightly sweet. Oat milk creates the best foam if you like frothy lattes. Avoid milks that are too watery, such as rice milk. For a traditional Indian version, use whole cow’s milk, but we prefer the more digestible plant-based options.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil helps with the absorption of turmeric (which is fat-soluble) and adds creamy richness. If you don’t have any, use ghee (Indian clarified butter) for an ultra-authentic version, or simply a little almond butter. Some people omit the fat altogether, but then you lose out on absorption and creaminess.
Honey or Maple Syrup
Raw, unpasteurized honey is traditional and adds its own antibacterial properties. Maple syrup gives a delicious caramelized sweetness and is vegan. Coconut sugar works just as well. Some prefer their golden milk unsweetened or with just a pitted Medjool date blended in. Adjust to your taste—golden milk should be comforting, not medicinal!
VARIATIONS & CUSTOMIZATIONS
Summer Iced Golden Milk
For a refreshing version on hot days, prepare your golden milk as usual but let it cool completely. Pour over ice cubes, adding extra cold plant-based milk if needed. Blend everything together in a blender with a frozen banana for a milkshake texture. Garnish with shredded coconut and cinnamon. It’s surprising but absolutely delicious in summer!
Golden Milk Protein Latte
Turn your golden milk into a protein-packed post-workout drink! Add 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (plant-based or whey) after removing from heat. Blend well to incorporate and create a frothy texture. Add 1 tablespoon of peanut butter for even more protein and creaminess. Perfect after yoga or the gym—recovery and anti-inflammation in one drink!
Chai-Spiced Golden Milk
For a spicier chai-style version, add these additional spices: 2 crushed cardamom pods, 2 cloves, 1 star anise, and a whole cinnamon stick. Steep these whole spices in the milk for 5 minutes over low heat before adding the turmeric. Strain before serving. It has a more complex flavor and is even more warming—perfect for cold winter evenings!
Chocolate Golden Milk
For a gourmet version that even kids will love, add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder along with the other spices. You’ll get an ultra-comforting “golden hot chocolate”! Add a bit more honey because the cocoa is bitter. Garnish with mini vegan marshmallows and dark chocolate shavings. This is our favorite version for an afternoon treat—healthy AND delicious!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does Golden Milk Stain teeth?
Turmeric may temporarily stain your teeth slightly, but don’t panic! Rinse your mouth with water after drinking, or brush your teeth. Ironically, turmeric is excellent for oral health and even whitens teeth in the long term when used as a paste. The yellow staining comes off easily. You can also drink with a reusable straw to minimize contact with your teeth.
When Should You Drink Golden Milk to Maximize Its Benefits?
Traditionally, golden milk is consumed in the evening before bedtime—it helps relax the body, reduce inflammation after the day, and promotes deep sleep. But you can also drink it in the morning to start the day with an anti-inflammatory boost, or in the afternoon as a comforting alternative to coffee. Just avoid drinking it on a completely empty stomach if you have a sensitive stomach or are sensitive to spices.
Can You Prepare Golden Milk in Advance?
You can prepare the spice mixture (turmeric paste) in advance, which will keep for 2 weeks in the refrigerator. However, golden milk itself should be consumed fresh—the spices can settle at the bottom and the texture changes as it cools. If you need to reheat it, do so gently over low heat, whisking well. Never boil it when reheating! You can prepare a large quantity and divide it into thermoses for the day.
Golden Milk Tastes Too Strong—How Can I Make It Milder?
If you find the taste of turmeric too earthy or bitter, start with just 1/2 teaspoon and gradually increase the amount. Add more cinnamon (which is naturally sweet) and more honey. Coconut milk masks the taste better than almond milk. You can also add a splash of vanilla extract or a blended date for more natural sweetness. Over time, you’ll come to appreciate the authentic taste!
Are There Any Contraindications?
Turmeric is generally very safe, but in large quantities it can interact with certain medications (anticoagulants, blood sugar medications). If you are pregnant, limit yourself to normal culinary quantities. People with gallstones should consult a doctor. Ginger can cause heartburn in some people. In normal doses (1 cup per day), golden milk is beneficial for most people, but consult your doctor if you have any concerns!
